Classes in a safe space

At Family Voice, women learn together in free, welcoming classes that go far beyond language. Whether it’s English, wellbeing, arts or starting your own business, every class is a response to what women tell us they need. About 60 different women attend our classes each week.

We offer many classes that are drop-in and flexible, so women can come when life allows — no judgement, no pressure. As well as courses that last 12 weeks.

Some arrive nervous at first, but quickly discover a space where they belong and where learning feels possible. Women bring their strengths, experiences and cultures with them — turning the classroom into a community where everyone learns from each other.

Women often say they gain much more than skills. They gain confidence to speak, courage to ask questions and friendships that continue outside the classroom. Some go on to volunteer or work. Many say that Family Voice is their Family.

Employment pipeline

Our employment pipeline is a mix of 12-week courses, drop-in activities and one-to-one support designed specifically for women with lived experience of migration. The aim is to build skills and confidence in applying for jobs, interviews and starting a new job.

We love giving Sheffield the opportunity to try authentic food cooked by local women with lived experience of migration. Our menu currently alternates between Sri Lankan, Punjabi, Nepalese, Bengali, and Iraqi cuisine.

You can try Ammi’s Kitchen food at:

We also sell spice packs and gift vouchers, which make perfect presents! All of our profits provide training and employment to local women with lived experience of migration who have faced barriers to accessing paid work.

After building confidence at Ammi’s Kitchen, many chefs have gained further employment or even started their own businesses. You can read their own words here:

“I feel happy and safe. I am more confident, I have this new feeling:
‘I can do it’”

“Working at Ammi’s Kitchen makes me more confident and more professional. My goal is to have my own restaurant or bakery one day”

Customer testimonial

“For anyone that hasn’t tried the Ammi’s Kitchen food, I wholeheartedly recommend it because it is amazing food cooked by local aunties and is as close to home cooking as you’ll get. Incredible!”
